Íñigo Ortiz de Urbina

Iñigo Ortiz de Urbina Gimeno is Criminal Law and Criminology professor at Universidad Complutense de Madrid and works for Oliva-Ayala Abogados by means of an agreement reached between the firm and Universidad Complutense under article 83 of the Ley Orgánica de Universidades.

Education

After graduating as the best student in his class and being a graduate student at Harvard and Munich, Íñigo Ortiz de Urbina earned a PhD in Law at Complutense University of Madrid, with a dissertation on economic analysis of Criminal Law which was unanimously granted a cum laude distinction. He specializes in economic Criminal Law, corporate criminal liability, and economic analysis of crime policy, topics on which he has published several books and many articles in academic journals both in Spain and in other countries and has also given many courses and lectures, including in the universities of Harvard, York, Pace, Buffalo, Humboldt zu Berlin, Erlangen, Buenos Aires, Chile, Módena and Milan. He is the co-editor of the Criminal Law and Criminology book series at Marcial Pons, and he is the editor and co-author of the prestigious volume, Criminal law and Business Law, published by Francis Lefebvre.

Experience

Prior to becoming a member of the Madrid bar, Íñigo Ortiz de Urbina worked as a judge for two years. He has successfully taken part in important cases in all levels and phases of the criminal justice system, including pleadings before the Supreme Court, and has successfully filed several appeals before the Constitutional Court. He has also worked on compliance matters, and was designated as external monitor in a World Bank sanctioning procedure.

Between 2009 and 2011 he served as special advisor for the Ministry of Justice. In this capacity he took part in Spanish and European legal proceedings and represented Spain in many international forums, including the European Union, the UN’s Committee Against Torture and General Assembly, and the Council of Europe’s Group of States Against Corruption. He has also been designated as an international expert in evaluation proceedings in the field of prevention of corruption by the OECD and the Council of Europe, and has taken part in British and US criminal court proceedings as an expert witness in Spanish criminal law.
